Have you ever thought about starting a small business but don’t know where to start?
The first step in starting a small business is of course, having an idea. But not just any idea, it must be something you can sell and that provides value to those who buy it.
The main way to find out if your idea is a good one is to do research! Start with researching your business idea in your location, and learn who your competitors are. Are those companies successful? Busy? What are their prices? This is called competitive intelligence, and it is extremely important. If there are 2 similar businesses in town and both are doing poorly, then they are either very bad, or the business idea doesn’t work in this location.
Once you know your idea is a good foundation for a business, you want to run with it. Ask people about what value they would get from your product or idea, ask your friends and family and people on social media. Build a buzz around your idea, and listen to their feedback and questions, as that will help you refine your ideas.
Another important piece of starting a business is having a great website. No one knows who you are yet, and you want to gain name recognition and have people remember your brand, and the best way to do that is to have a beautiful and memorable website. You will be giving your website URL to anyone and everyone as you build and grow your business, so it should be something you’re proud of, and proud to have your name on.
The next step is to start with deciding who your target customer is. Is it a specific gender? Age group? Parents? Non-parents?
Once you know WHO your audience is, you will be able to find ways to reach those potential customers. For example, if your main audience is mothers in their 30s, Facebook and other social media are likely your best bet, along with mom-specific websites and blogs. You can advertise on them and catch their eye.
Starting a new business isn’t easy, but it should be a passion project. The work, and effort and time it takes to start a business should be going to building something you’re passionate about.
